Mr. Stephen Hendricks - DIRECTOR OF BANDS
Mr. Hendricks comes to South Forsyth from East Paulding High School . In six years serving the East Paulding community, He oversaw the growth of the instrumental music program from 61 enrolled students, to approximately 200. Within that period of growth, East Paulding experienced the establishment of numerous additional ensembles and educational opportunities to supplement the pre-existing Wind Ensemble and Marching Band. These new ensembles have included a Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Indoor Percussion Ensemble, Varsity Winter Guard, Junior Varsity Winter Guard, Beginning Guitar Class, a piano program, and an AP Music Theory Program.
In 2012 Mr. Hendricks was named the EPHS New Teacher of the Year and in 2014 the EPHS Teacher of the Year. He says "I have truly been blessed with the unwavering support of my Superintendent, Cliff Cole and my incredible principal, Jason Freeman. Under our watch, the program has witnessed unprecedented success, including the addition of an assistant band director, and $1,500,000.00 in financial support to be distributed throughout the bands of Paulding County. With this backing, the East Paulding High School Band has grown into one of the premier programs within the state of Georgia. The bands have consistently received superior ratings at the Georgia Music Educator's Association - Large Group Performance Evaluation. The marching band has been named the Georgia Marching Band Series Champion, and has earned multiple GMEA Grand Championships. The school’s top ensemble, the East Paulding High School Wind Ensemble, was invited to and has performed in Carnegie Hall, NY at the NYIMF. The group regularly studies and performs collegiate-level musical literature. Each year, the program has students accepted into audition-based honor band events such as the Georgia Music Educator's Association: All-State Band, District 7 Honor Band, County Honor Band, Janfest Honor Band and Winterfest Honor Band. In the last six years, 13 graduates of the program have received music scholarships from major universities including the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University, Columbus State University, and Jacksonville State University. I have been blessed with support, to say the least."
Prior to his appointment at East Paulding High School, Mr. Hendricks was the Associate Director of Bands at Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill, Georgia. There, the Richmond Hill Bands received superior ratings at the Georgia Music Educator Association’s - Large Group Performance Evaluation and in 2008, were named Grand Champion Marching Band for the first time in the school’s 30-year history.
Mr. Hendricks is a native of Savannah, GA. He is a first generation college graduate, having completed his Bachelor of Music in December of 2007 from the University of Georgia, and his Master of Music Education from Florida State University in May of 2011. Additionally, he have served on the educational faculty of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle corps, achieving a Drum Corps International World Championship ranking and finish of 4th. Mr. Hendricks said "I believe I spent the most formative years of my music education, surrounded by some of the finest teachers in the activity."
In addition to his efforts within the Paulding County community, Mr. Hendricks is a business-owner and works actively as a clinician, adjudicator, arranger, and studio instructor. He have served as a composer for over 40 different high school band programs within the state of Georgia, and greater than 70 performing ensembles, nationally and internationally. These programs range as near as Alabama and as far away as the Republic of Singapore.
Mr. Hendricks feels lessed to work for the Forsyth County School District and is committed to being a lifelong learner.
mr. Dixon pendergrass - Associate Director
Mr. Pendergrass comes to us from his most recent appointment as part of the band staff at Milton High School in Milton, GA. He is a graduate of Columbus State University where he received his Bachelor of Music: Music Education while studying saxophone under the esteemed, Dr. Joseph Girard. In addition to saxophone, he is also fluent in horn/mellophone performance. Dixon is an alumni of both Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps from Atlanta, GA and the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, CA where he was a DCI World Champion.
